I’ve always loved the sound of the big band! If you can hear a great band with great players, soloists, arrangements.. That’s amazing! So, off course, I really like to play with great big bands! Play with a band that really knows how to create that sound. The intonation.. The last years I’ve had the pleasure to play with some of Swedens best bands like Blue House Jazz Orchestra, Ann-Sofi Söderqvist Jazz Orchestra, Håkan Broström New Places Orchestra and Peter Asplund Big Band. When you look around and see your idols that you’ve been listening to for years. Wow! I’m looking forward to more great big band gigs 2016!!

29th of November is Billy Strayhorns birthday! In two days, at 29th of November, it is 100 years since he was born. I’m very happy that we are celebrating this at Glenn Miller Café in Stockholm. We’ll play with my band, and we have the great pleasure to have Jan Allan as guest. Just get the chance to play together with Jan.. I’m really looking forward to this! One week later, 7th of December, we play at Duke Ellington Society in Stockholm.

Billy Strayhorn has been my favorite composer a long time! It did not really started with Ellington. It started when I was listening to other musicians that recorded some of his song at their albums, and this song really made me listen. And that’s how it started. I think there is something unique in all his song. It could be melodic motive, an harmonic progression or maybe the form. And his ballads. They are magic!

I hope we can continue work with this project and this great music! Anyway I’m sure it will be at my repertoire the rest of my life!

I had a great tour to Finland! When I went to Finland I did not really know anyone in the band, but met three great guys and musicians to hang out with for ten days! Karri Luhtala have started a great project, Il Mondo di Karri, and keep inviting people to Finland. This time he set up a tour with seven gigs, and we played and met a lot of very nice people in Turku, Lahti, Rihimaki, Hyvinkää, Kotka and Helsinki! Thank you Karri, Valerio Vantaggio and Jacopo Ferrazza! Next time I hope we can continue over to Sweden!

Sedan länge har Billy Strayhorn varit en av mina absoluta favoritkompositörer. Du kan direkt höra vem det är som har komponerat den fantastiska musiken. Det som har fångat mig är det unika i hans kompositioner. Enligt min upplevelse kan det vara en harmonisk progression eller ett specifikt melodiskt motiv som gör kompositionen unik. Alltid med en karaktäristisk färg och klang.
När jag spelade in min platta 2012 ville jag lägga till en standardlåt som länk mellan mina inspiratörer och mina kompositioner, och valet föll såklart på en av Billy Strayhorn och Duke Ellintons låtar; Isfahan. En låt som när den skrevs fick titeln Elf, men döptes till Ellingtons album Far East Suite om till Isfahan efter bandets besök i Iran.

Utanför de platser Billy Strayhorn bodde under största delen av tiden i New York. Överst 315 Convent Avenue, och bilden under 15 West 106th street. Numera Duke Ellington Boulevard.

Jag hade länge tänkt göra ett projekt med mitt band där vi bara spelar Strayhorns musik. När vi bjöds in till föreningen SWEJS i Stockholm för att spela med min kvartett kändes det som ett perfekt tillfälle! I år är det dessutom 100 år sedan Billy föddes!
Till den här konserten tog vi upp några av Billys mest kända kompositioner som Lush Life, My Little Brown Book och Lotus Blossom men också några som inte spelats lika ofta, som Everything is Copasetic och Strange Feeling. Självklart berättar jag också historien bakom låtarna och mer om samarbetet mellan Ellington och Strayhorn. För att bredda de klangliga möjligheterna bjöd vi in den fantastiska trombonisten Magnus Wiklund till det här projektet.

Det känns väldigt kul att utöka bandets repertoar med ett så tydligt koncept. Vi gör nu konserter där vi fokuserar på Strayhorns musik, men gör självklart även konserter med originalmusik.

I write some words from the tourbus! The autumn will be as it use to be with a lot of different projects. I’ll add some gigs in the calendar! I’m waiting for some answers, and hopfully I will do a Eorupean tour later in november!! Right now we’re going to Vänersborg with Ann-Sofi Söderqvist Jazz Orchestra. Later in oktober I will do a duo gig back home in Fagerås, play with my quartet in Stockholm, play with the Scandinavian Glenn Miller Orchestra and do a trip to Scania with the Quiet Nights Orchestra. I’m really looking forward to this, and hope to meet you at some of the gigs!
